When I think back to about four years ago, I don’t think I remember one dance show on TV until So You Think You Can Dance. Now, I think there are about five or six that are on throughout the seasons. Knowing this, I am so amazed at how popular dancing has become not only on reality TV shows, but also in Hollywood movies such as Stomp the Yard and Love N’ Dancing.
Dancing is making its way into homes all over the world as a standard past time. I remember back years ago in school, it was always a class clown who danced just for attention, but no one took it seriously. If a boy was dancing, it was just for a joke, but now, dancing is so much more, especially to boys. I think kids are starting to realize that it is actually quite physically challenging and actually “cool” to be a dancer. Because of that, kids are less stressed about trying it or hiding it from classmates.
In all perspectives though, it’s not just the kids that are realizing dance is a legitimate sport, but also the parents. I think with these TV shows and movies help parents also see that it is something worth pursuing. Too many times I hear of parents not letting their kids dance because it is a waste of time and won’t get them anywhere. But more and more of that thought is diminishing because of the widespread publicity dance gets from shows like SYTYCD and America’s Best Dance Crew. Dance is less and less looked at as a hobby or past time, but as a real sport that can become a career for a lot of people. Hopefully in the future, kids will be able to dance more freely and parents will look at it like they do baseball or football. It is just a matter of time and patience.
