Patty Hearst: A dramatization of the newspaper heiress’s abduction and succeeding brainwashing by the Symbionese Liberation Army. The movie never recovers from a painful first half hour that tries to express, from Hearst?s point of view, the effects of this coordinated mental suffering she is put through. Cast includes Natasha Richardson, William Forsythe, Ving Rhames, Dana Delany, Frances Fisher, Jodi Long, and Olivia Barash. (108 minutes, 1988)
The Protector: Bizare mix of a kung fu film and a boy-and his pup tale, this inexpensive looking prduction from Thailand gets sentimental while a youthful martial artist has his cherished elephant stolen by thugs and transported to Australia. Following the poor men there, he hooks up with a Thaiborn Australian investigator and does battle with wicked gangs and others in an attempt to repossess his little Dumbo. Cast includes Tony Jaa, Petchtai Wongkamlao, Bongkoj Khongmalai, Nathan Jones, Johnny Nguyen, Xing Jing, and Damian De Montemas. (81 minutes, 2005)
Sidewalk Stories: Alluring, Chaplinesque fantasy that, in its own humble way, boldly remarks on the plight of the destitute in America. Aisle stars as a destitute gentleman battling for existence on the roads of Greenwich Village who finds himself caring for a small child whose father has been stabbed by robbers. Cast includes Charles Aisle, Nicole Alysia, Sandye Wilson, Darnell Williams, and Trula Hoosier. (97 minutes, 1989)
Good Sam: Virtually complete misfire, regardless of cast and director. Cooper is an incurable good guy in this inanimate comedy. Cast includes Gary Cooper, Ann Sheridan, Ray Collins, Edmund Lowe, Joan Lorring, and Ruth Roman. (113 minutes, 1948)
Semi-Tough: Carefree comedy in reference to 2 football megastars and their reciprocal lady friend drifts too much to hit some chief points however it does have some ludicrous minutes. Reynolds’ charm makes up for film’s other deficiencies. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Kris Kristofferson, Jill Clayburgh, Robert Preston, Bert Convy, Lotte Lenya, Roger E. Rhapsody in August: Average (by his estimations) little Kurosawa piece in reference to the hurtful rememberings of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn’t appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady’s lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima. (98 minutes, 1991)
Stage Door: Theatrical boarding home is setting for remarkable film, from an Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman play. Dynamite cast contains Hepburn as opulent gal trying to be successful on her own, Menjou as proposing creator, Leeds as allergic actress, and a few future stars such as Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, and Eve Arden.
