Mozilla FireFox Breaks Download Record But Wait…

Mozilla Firefox released version 3.0 earlier this week and sough after a new Guinness Book Of World Records for Software Downloads. No record was recorded in the past, but it seemed like an excellent opportunity and public relations kudos to attempt to record a new Guinness World Record.

“We exceeded 8 million downloads in our 24 hour period,” the blog states. Downloads were tracked from 11:16am PDT on June 17th to 11:16am PDT on the following day.

The Record was captured but not without a few server down times, and last but not least a Secruity Flaw being reported that makes the new version susceptible attacks.

TippingPoint’s DVLabs reported that its Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) program received a critical vulnerability affecting Firefox 3.0 as well as prior versions of Firefox 2.0.x.

“Successful exploitation of the vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code. Not unlike most browser-based vulnerabilities that we see these days, user interaction is required such as clicking on a link in e-mail or visiting a malicious Web page,” DVLabs noted.

The Secruity flaw is being held under tight wraps and the Mozilla people and working diligently for a fix. We should hear and even auto download a fix int he next several days, or the record download and the Guinness World Record notoriety is just a Public Relations Snafu!!
