Being a Stay at home Step-dad, a webmaster and part time writer can bring about some hectic days. This past weekend was no exception. After picking up the kids, attending a Cub Scout Function, Shopping for Groceries, getting Hair Cuts, the Yard screamed for attention.
And the Leaves Keep Falling. The yard was blanketed in a sea of brown and reddish leaves. There was grass of some sort somewhere under this mountain of seasonal change. But where.Â
I often ponder why we must remove the leaves. Some of the neighbors will utilize the wind and gravity effect. You know let them all blow out of their yard into the yard of the 9 am lawn care enthusiast. Mr 9 AM will take care of it. He is better than an alarm clock on a lazy Saturday morning, the sound of Lawn Mover and Leaf Blowers is always a welcome sound after a long hard Friday night.
But the Leaves Keep Falling, and with my task in hand and “Honey Do list” the yard needs my attention. I swear we don’t have this many trees and the leaves are not all ours, I keep saying over and over in my minds as I work the leaf blower. Figure out a way to mark them or brand them next year is the plan mulling in my head.
75 Feet is my destination. The Curb. The final resting spot and receptacle of Fall’s end and winters approach. The Task is a battle of Man vs Nature.
And the Leaves Keep Falling, but victory is the site of green grass. With steady sweeping strokes of compressed air billowing from the Man’s Greatest Lawn Care Invention, the leaves obey the laws of nature and march onward toward the curb. Victory will be mine. Green Grass will be seen in my yard rather than the oppression of brown decay.
And the Leaves Keep Falling, but the battle has begun. The orange extension cords mark my freedom and path back towards the couch and College Football. The Leaves will not win today I declare, as I attack with force. Piles of debris, acorns and leaves signal a retreat as I move steadily toward the curb.
Yes there is green grass on the yard and a Pile 5 feet wide, 5 feet high and about 30 feet long at the leave graveyard known as the Curb.
Victory is mine today. And The Leaves Keep Falling.

I don’t believe in raking up the leaves. They are nature’s blanket from the winter. They protect delicate shoots of vegetation, and keep the ground insulated for the little insects that live underground. I have always lived in the country where we aren’t forced to rake up our leaves like they insist you do in town.I let nature blow them where she wanted them to be. I always had a green yard year round because my grass was protected. In the Spring I would turn on the mulcher and mulch/mow the yard. the leaves made a great fertilizer for the new emerging plant life. My lawn would always be greener then anyone on my road.
I don’t think I could live anywhere where it was required to rake the lawn. A lawn covered in natures leaves is the most beautiful sight in the Fall.
